Fellow, members: I feel compelled to write this given the “surprise” expressed by some that we no longer have a “Coffee, Tea, and Cookie Service” at our monthly meetings.
Our 2013 Coordinator, Fred WY2E, posted this change on the QSY website before today’s meeting but some (a good guess would be those who don’t regularly check out www.qsysociety.or) were blindsided.
As one half of the previous “Coffee and Cookies Team” — Fred being the other half – let me just say say when I joined QSY a handful of years ago, there was *no* refresment service offered. It was BYOB.
Because of my involvement in other clubs (different disciplines from Ham Radio), I couldn’t usnderstand why we didn’t have at least some coffee and tea. Shirley N2SKP informed me that QSY once had coffee at their meetings but no one wanted to take on the job. I guess it was too much trouble.
Well, as luck would have it, I did not even have one full year as a QSY member when I found myself elected Coordinator ( no one wanted that job either!).
As Coordinator, with Fred my Co-coordinator, both of us decided we’d re-instigate coffee and cookies. I bought a two coffee pots and a hot water boiler – at my own expense. Fred volunteered to store the equipment and supplies (we were not permitted to leave them at the library). I bought the cookies and 2 gallons of water each month. We did this for two (2) years. All at our own expense.
We set everything up each month. At the end of each meeting, we cleaned everything after use. Sometimes we had help. Usually, all we heard was, “When is the coffee going to be ready?” – or – “I only drink de-caf; how come we don’t have de-caf?”
I guess we just got tired after awhile. No one else seemed interested in giving us a break from this routine. So while everyone else was having a fun time during the 10:00 a.m to 10:30 a.m pre-meeting birds-of-a-feather gathering, we were measuring out scoops of coffee and searching for magic markers to identify the de-caf pot lest someone be offended that we did not address their dietary restrictions.
That’s it in a nutshell. If you are a member who would like to see coffee re-appear at our monthly meetings either step forward or stop complaining.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution.
