Elecraft K2 & K1

As some of you may know, I built a Elecraft K2 tranceiver four months ago and have been using it with great success. I operate only CW and QRP (5 Watts or less). To date, I have worked 90 different countries (QRP CW); these included Japan.

Yesterday, at 5:46 PM I worked my 90 th country, and this was Australia, VK2AET on 10 meters running 4.8 Watts from my K2 to an OCF dipole. We had a 12 minute solid QSO, and Scott (the Austalian) couldn’t believe I was QRP. This contact also gave me the last continent I needed for QRP WAC.

As a point of interest, this turned out to be well over 2,000 miles per Watt.

Also, I recently built a Elecraft K1 transceiver and worked Germany, Ukraine and South Africa for my first 3 QSO’s . These rigs are by far the best I have ever operated and that includes Collins, Kenwood and Icom. I have even made contacts through pile-ups more than once with my 5 Watts.

Japan on 5 Watts and a 44′ Wire in the Attic

Christmas Island on 5 Watts and a Wire

Tony W1ZMB and Stan WB2LQF both worked T32C, the Christmas Island DXpedition.  Tony worked them on 10 meters using his K2 at 5 watts and a 135′ OCF dipole; Stan worked them on 17 meters using his K2 at 5 watts and a 44′ attic doublet.  Christmas Island is one of the Line Islands in the South Pacific, south of Hawaii, north of Tahiti, and almost directly east of Howland Island (where Amelia Earheardt is believed to have crashed).  Hope this whets your appetite to come out for our annual “QRP in the Park” event!
